Diskless Linux™ Systems

A one day short course covering the set up and use of two popular dedicated Linux Systems:

 The Linux Terminal Server

The Linux Terminal server will allow networked PC’s to act as Graphical or Character based terminals to a Unix/Linux server.  Since the client boots over the network, the hard disk is not touched and doesn’t even need to be present!  This is a very simple and cost effective way of making Unix 'Thin Clients'

The Linux Router

Linux Routers boot a simplified Linux System from a floppy with facilities to act as a Network Router, DHCP server and Firewall.  This is ideal for people wishing to use this to serve a group of people from a single broadband ADSL connection.  Alternatively, organisations wishing to partition their networks into a number of sub-nets can utilise legacy PC's running the LRP to facilitate this.

This course can either be given as a standalone one day event if the delegates are already Unix and Networking aware or as a final day to our Linux/Unix Networking course.

Notes

  1. With the exception of the Terminal server, all systems used do not have their hard disks touched.
  2. The terminal server system should be running a current version of Linux (e.g. RedHat).
  3. Client systems can be legacy systems (check with us for details).
  4. Networks need to be provided for testing the router(s).
  5. An Internet connection is needed for downloading of packages, etc.
