Using Solaris™


An introductory course to the Solaris version of Unix from Sun Microsystems.  The course looks at both Workstation and command line use of the system and goes on to include some basic System Administration and TCP/IP based networking.  The workstations aspects use the Common Desktop Environment (CDE).

* Introduction - Versions, features and concepts
* Logging In - Logging in and out, passwords, telnet
* Workstations - The Sun Window Managers, OpenLook and CDE
- Running applications
- The terminal window, shells, command line format
- Help Screens and Manual pages
- The X-Window system
- Remote display of windows
* Files - Filenames and Pathnames, wildcards, the file system tree,
- The current directory, relative pathnames
- Directories; Manipulating, listing
- Access permissions ( chmod )
- File manipulation ( cp, mv, rm etc.)
- X-Window File Managers
- Viewing files ( more, cat, etc.)
* Editors - Simple use of vi
- The X-Window text editor
* Solaris Utilities - The find command
- Mail programs
- Pattern extractors (grep, cut, diff)
- Backup / Archiving with tar
- The ftp file transfer program
* I/O Redirection - Principles, importance
- Pipes & Filters
* Processes - Concepts
- Creating background processes, Job Control
- Process Status ( ps )
- Killing Processes, Signals
* Admintool - Usage, managing ports, printers
- Adding Users, the password files
* Devices - Device names, disk, tape
- Volume management, CDs and floppies
* Startup and Shutdown - Startup files
- Shutdown Commands
* Links to files - Hard & Symbolic links
* Memory Management - Principles
* Networking with TCP/IP - Overview, UUCP, TCP/IP
- Addressing principles, formats, subnets
- The Domain Name System
- Protocols and application programs
- The Berkeley r* programs (rlogin, rcp, rsh etc.)
* Network File Systems - Principles, features, advantages
- Server daemons, share and mount
- NIS Overview

  1. All participants receive printed notes which include all the slides plus additional material.
  2. A comprehensive list of exercises is provided.
  3. The length of the Course is normally four days.
